A 40-year-old former driving examiner from Sliema has admitted to accepting bribes in exchange for driving licences in a case dating back to 2006.

The man, Nicolai Magrin, served as a driving examiner for Transport Malta in its former guise as the Malta Transport Authority (ADT).

A number of people who bribed Magrin were sentenced in court in 2006 when the allegations first surfaced.

One person who attended driving lessons for over a year and sat for the driving test seven times, failing on every occasion.

The person’s driving instructor suggested paying Mr Magrin Lm50 (€116) in order to obtain his licence.

Evidence was heard in court on 30 July 2015 following a plea bargaining agreement with the Attorney General, with Magrin admitting his guilt.

Magistrate Consuelo Scerri Herrera sentenced Magrin to a two-year jail term, suspended for four years.

He was also given a 10-year interdiction.

Inspector Jonathan Ferris prosecuted.
