The government this afternoon said it is following the case of a 45-year-old Maltese man who has been reported missing in Libya.

He was last seen yesterday in Tripoli. “At this stage the competent authorities are doing all they can to find out more about what happened.”

The government renewed its advice against travel to Libya. It called on everyone to exercise caution so that the case could be solved in a positive way.

Three Maltese men were arrested in Libya over the past few weeks. Sea Captain Carmelo Grech was detained for 21 days in Libya before being released and sent back to Malta.

Another man, a Syrian-born Maltese, was also arrested in Libya, reportedly in connection with fuel smuggling.

A third man was also arrested, also allegedly over fuel smuggling, after Libyan authorities intercepted the Maltese-owned tanker Santa Cruz near Zuwara. He was reportedly transferred to Misurata along with four Egyptians who were also onboard.
