An Estonian woman who claimed she was raped has been ordered to see a psychiatrist by the court to determine whether she was mentally fit to stand trial.
The woman had approached the police and claimed she was raped by someone who lived in the same place she was living.
Magistrate Natasha Galea Sciberras heard Inspectors Sylvana Briffa and Christabelle Chetcuti explain how the woman, whose name is not being mentioned to protect her identity, claimed she was raped by a foreign man who lived in the same villa.
While investigating, the police discovered that CCTV footage revealed nobody had entered the room after her and that she did not flee the room as claimed.
The Estonian woman has been charged with filing a false report on 20 August.
Defence Lawyer Joseph Mizzi requested that a psychiatrist be appointed to asses the woman’s mental state and whether she was mentally capable of standing trial.
The prosecution said she had escaped a psychiatric hospital in Estonia and later travelled to Malta.
The woman is being held at Mt Carmel Hospital until she is evaluated.
