PM says IVF issue should not be politicised, reiterates that embryo freezing option is on the table

The Prime Minister today said the issue of IVF and embryo freezing should not be politicised, and it was up to the Nationalist Party as to whether it took part in the consultation process on the matter.

Acknowledging that he is “in a minority,” Dr Muscat again reiterated that various options are being looked at, including embryo freezing.

The proposal has proved to be controversial, with the Gift of Life Foundation expressing its “alarm and deep disappointment” last week at the apparent “foregone conclusions” Dr Muscat has reached on the matter.

Asked about his proposals on solving the migrant problem in Marsa, Dr Muscat said the situation needs to be rectified, and the government will be putting forward a number of proposals in this regard in the coming weeks.

Apart from protecting migrants, Dr Muscat said Maltese people also need to be protected from “unscrupulous people” offering bad working conditions.

The Prime Minister was speaking during a tour of Dar tal- Providenza to mark its 50th anniversary.

He described the home as a great institution and said the government is working on introducing more community-based care.
