A number of inmates, around 50, who are residing in Division 12 have gone on hunger strike and have been refusing to eat since Tuesday night, this newsroom can confirm.
Sources who spoke to this newsroom said that the inmates are complaining over the fact that meals prepared in the prison kitchen are not up to standard, and that the kitchen’s condition leaves much to be desired.
Sources also said that some inmates found insects in their food and that those who prepared their meals smoked in the kitchen.
Last week, this newsroom revealed that a number of inmates suffered an episode of food poisoning, which was later confirmed by the health and prison authorities. We also revealed that the kitchen is in a disastrous state and the fans are engulfed with dust, as described by sources on the inside.
This newsroom also reported that five inspections had been made in the last year at the prison kitchen by the health directorate but it is not known what the results of lab tests made were following the visits.
