Marvy Casha, the mother of the 10 year old disabled boy who last week was allegedly abused by a nurse in Mount Carmel Hospital told this newsroom that she is not seeking financial compensation but simply wants justice for her son. “I wanted this case to be out in the public so that such abuses will stop and justice will prevail for my son.”

She was giving her reaction to this newsroom after the Malta Union of Midwives and Nurses alleged in a statement today that her story was “fabricated” for financial gain.  She is challenging the union to produce any proof that she is after financial compensation from the government.

The nurses’ union launched an attack on The Malta Independent this morning after this paper revealed the alleged abuse case on Sunday. Sources said the police are actively investigating the case and are seeking the arraignment of a person in connection with the case. 

The MUMN said it was cautioning The Malta Independent not to “exert undue pressure on police cases as well as departmental and internal investigations at Mount Carmel Hospital.”

It said that, once this paper had done its duty to inform the public about the alleged abuse case it should respect the natural course of the investigations and wait for their outcome. It went on to allege that, because of this “undue pressure” by the media, the inspector investigating the case would be taking a person to court “without having the necessary proof.”

The MUMN said that, in this way, the media could be acting as “an accomplice to someone who is fabricating a story for financial compensation because they were going through a financially difficult time.” It claimed to be informed that the woman was seeking a sum of money.

On Monday night of last week, a 10-year-old boy suffering from muscular dystrophy and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) was admitted to the Youth Residence ward at Mount Carmel for observation due to recent treatment that had resulted in some behavioural problems.

As reported exclusively by The Malta Independent on Sunday, during the evening, when the nurse in question was in charge of administering the ten-year-old boy's heart medication, a disagreement led to the nurse punching the boy on both sides of his rib cage, the boy's mother Marvy Casha said.

She also said the nurse used derogatory language against the boy as well as deliberately refused to help him get onto his bed from his wheelchair.

Once the boy successfully managed to struggle from wheelchair to bed, the nurse in question proceeded to put him back on the wheelchair to watch him struggle another two times, the mother said. The following morning, the nurse threatened the 10-year-old boy not to speak about what had happened. His ordeal finally ended when his mother came during visiting hours at around 4pm. 

On Tuesday this portal reported how the nurse was redeployed to another ward.
