A public consultation process on a draft bill for the film industry was launched today by Tourism Minister Edward Zammit Lewis.

Dr Zammit Lewis said the bill will herald the introduction of a national approach towards the film industry, for the first time in 90 years.

He said that over the past two years the film industry in Malta has been given a new lease of  life, and is an  important contributor to the economy.

Malta must continue to build on these successes he said, by implementing a long-term strategy.

The national strategy is based on a number of parameters which are important to the industry, such as infrastructure, financial incentives, the indigenous industry, education.

By the end of the year, the film industry will have contributed around €100 million to the economy, when compared to the €29 million in 2014 and five million in 2013.
