Local theatre and drama lovers are in for a real treat. Between 25 and 27 September, the Malta Drama Centre will be organising the MDC Youth Theatre Festival 2015, featuring no less than eight Maltese theatre companies.
The MDC Youth Theatre Festival is a biannual festival dedicated to young artists and is the youth branch of the Malta International Theatre Festival launched in 2014 to commemorate the 20th Anniversary (1994-2014) since the official establishment of the Malta Drama Centre as the national performing arts school under the Department of Education.
The aim of the Festival is to present, by way of a variety of plays, performances and subsequent critical analyses, colloquies and workshops, a global picture of the diverse trends in theatre, and to encourage encounters between young theatre practitioners and an opportunity for them to work alongside more established actors and directors.
The festival will include 8 different one act plays, varying in genre , length and language (Maltese and English). The productions which shall be participating are "In Stitches" a musical comedy produced by Centrestage and directed by Tiziana Calleja, "Blast" a drama written by Jesmond Zerafa produced by Expoline and directed by Dorothy Singh, "L-Odixin" a comedy written by James Sultana and Becky D'Ugo produced by MADC and directed by James Sultana, Oreste Calleja's theatre of the absurd "Anestesija" directed by Manuel Cassar and Woody Allen's comedy "Central park West" directed by Sean Briffa (both produced by the Malta Drama Centre), the historical comedy "The complete history of Malta (more or less) written and directed by Malcolm Galea for More or Less Theatre, George Peresso's brand new comedy "Il-Gabuba" directed by Joe Pace and produced by Versilħoss and commedia dell'arte piece "Mistura ta' mħabba għal Arlecchino" written and directed by Narcy Calamatta and produced by Żararti.
Apart from the productions selected for staging, the festival will also include a discussion with the title "Youths and theatre in Malta: what does the future hold?" led by different local and foreign actors and directors as well as scriptwriters. The discussion will be held on Sunday 27 September between 10am and 12pm at the Malta Drama Centre.
