A final year medical student at Barts and The London School of Medicine and Dentistry writes in the English media that the conditions of doctors’ contracts in the UK are pushing her to seek a job elsewhere, and her first choice is Malta.

Writing in The Telegraph, Sarah Ward says that she is due to qualify as a doctor in 2016, but while she feels a moral obligation to repay the investment in her training paid by UK taxpayer, the new contract being imposed on trainee doctors is unacceptable.

“I'm lucky,” she writes, “because all this has been imposed just before I send out my job applications. So when the application system opens on the 5th October, I will be putting my name up for Maltese jobs. Aside from the obvious advantages of sun and sea, Maltese doctors do not have the pressures faced by my more senior colleagues in the NHS. They do not have to worry that their employer might suddenly move the goalposts as to what constitutes ‘out of hours working’, or that they will be financially penalised for changing specialty during their training despite having years of additional experience.”
