The MUT today welcomed the court’s decision on a teacher who was cleared of abusing a child and appreciated the relative swiftness in which it was reached.

In a statement, the union hoped that the person involved is now not dragged into further turmoil and that justice is delivered to this person by acting upon those persons responsible for all the reckless allegations against him. Only in this way one can ensure that frivolous allegations are not repeated.

Also, the union appealed with the courts to speed up similar cases, especially in Gozo, where one in particular has been going on for more than four years. The MUT hoped that the lessons learnt from this case will create perspective when dealing with other current and future cases. Meanwhile the union thanked the police for clarifying the methodologies used in such cases. 

On Thursday, a teacher, Anthony Callus, 46, of Siggiewi, was acquitted of child abuse charges after a court dismissed the testimony given by a 10-year-old boy, deeming it not credible.
