A Malta Developers Association delegation met the Minister responsible for transport and Transport Malta officials during which the current problem of traffic on local roads was discussed.
While the MDA made it clear that it does not agree with restrictions in the times when contractors’ vehicles can be operated because this means that they will have to suffer disproportionately because of the problem, the MDA submitted positive suggestions that can lead to lessen the traffic problem in the short term.
It agreed with the idea that public transport should be free of charge between 6.00 and 9.00 a.m. and between 3.30 and 6 p.m.
The MDA also called for better co-ordination when roads are closed due to works or other reasons. At the moment these are being closed without giving drivers alternative routes.
The association said park and ride services should be available in different localities and attempts should be made to have motorcycle lanes where possible. It also suggested media education campaigns for all drivers.
The MDA stated that it also believes that there is an urgent need for big investment in transport infrastructure to lead to a long-term solution to the problem.
