The government’s decision to reduce electricity tariffs by 25% was based on an average price per unit of 9c6 said Energy Minister Konrad Mizzi this evening in parliament.
In response to a question put forward in parliament by Nationalist MP Kristy Debono on calls for a further reduction of tariffs, Minister Mizzi said talks were underway with GRTU and the Chamber of Commerce, amongst others, and through presentations they are understanding the financials of Enemalta.
The talks also included initiatives to help businesses, such as with regard to energy efficiency as well as billing programmes.
Generation of energy by fuel would cost 6c7 per unit, renewable energy about 15c while energy generated through the interconnector cost between 4c and 18c depending on the time and usage.
On some occasions, limitations by the supplier on the use of the interconnector can be imposed, such as last week when a limit was put of 50 megawatts.
