1,436 couples have been granted a divorce by the courts ever since introduction into Maltese law in October 2011, Justice Minister Owen Bonnici said this evening.

Replying to a PQ by Government Whip Godfrey Farrugia, Dr Bonnici said during this period, the Maltese courts granted divorce to 1,386 couples while the Gozo courts granted divorce to 50 couples.

2012 saw the highest number of divorces, with 450. The lowest number so far was registered in 2014, with 327. 255 couples were been granted divorce between January and September of this year.
