226 people charged with assaulting police officers in the past two and a half years

Since March 2013, 226 persons have been taken to court with charges including assault on police officers, Home Affairs Minister Carmelo Abela said this evening.

Replying to a PQ by Government whip Godfrey Farrugia, Mr Abela said 135 of these cases had been concluded and the accused found guilty.

In reply to another PQ, Mr Abela said that two police officers had been found to be under the influence of alcohol between 1999 and 2012. Both had been given written warnings and are stil serving on the force. 

Information tabled in Parliament also shows that 24 police officers were injured in the line of duty this year so far. 56 were injured on duty in 2014 and 65 were injured in 2013.
