Enemalta plc employees completed a voluntary work project at Dar Qalb ta' Gesu, at Santa Venera, to provide new computer rooms for children of families recovering from domestic violence.

Dar Qalb ta' Gesu is a second-stage shelter where mothers and children victims of domestic violence are provided with a residential support and training programme that helps them regain the required confidence and capabilities to lead an independent life.

Workers from different Enemalta departments spent some of their free time at this Home to carry out the different works, including cleaning, painting, general maintenance, installation of new electrical and network systems, metal works, joinery and the setting up of 14 computer systems. The new computer rooms will be used by the children to continue their studies whilst living at the Shelter.

Works began earlier this year upon the initiative of employees from Enemalta's ICT department. Other sections, including the electricity distribution workshops and the electricity generation department were also roped in to help at different stages. The Company provided the computers, the electrical equipment and other materials required. Other employees also raised funds to be donated to the Shelter's administration for curtains and other finishing touches to the rooms.

Dar Qalb ta' Gesu is managed by the Church and financially supported by the State and donations from the community. It can welcome up to nine families for an 18-month programme coordinated by support workers and other professionals who help them get back on their feet. The families are given a safe place to live, as well as all the necessary moral support and training in different life skills. Mothers are helped to seek employment and lead a more independent life. At the same time, their children are supported to overcome the effects of domestic violence and to maintain their academic development.

Ing. Fredrick Azzopardi, Enemalta plc Executive Chairman, praised the team of employees at Dar Qalb ta' Gesu for helping many families overcome such difficult experiences. He thanked the Enemalta workers for their commitment to this project. "Perhaps we do not realise that when we dedicate some of our time to help others, we will be gaining experiences that can strengthen our skills and values in other aspects of our lives. At the same time, this community work helps us become more sensitive to the needs of other individuals. I encourage our employees, as well as other companies, to continue seeking new ways of contributing to a better quality of life in our communities."

Mgr. Victor Zammit Mckeon, Dar Qalb ta' Gesu Director, thanked all the employees for their time and effort. Ms Judith Debono, the Shelter's Administrator, explained that "these computer rooms are a very important addition to the services we offer to children and youths at this Home. It provides them with another encouragement to continue their studies." She also thanked the two employees who take care of Dar Qalb ta' Gesu's upkeep, who also work hard to improve the Shelter's environment.
