David Casa document on 'A modern Social Europe' - Refugee crisis creating strain

Thursday, 28 January 2016, 16:35 Last update: about 9 years ago

This afternoon the Casa Document on a ‘Modern Social Europe’ was discussed during a meeting of the European People’s Party Bureau. The EPP is the largest political group in the European Parliament with David Casa occupying the role of lead MEP on Employment and Social Affairs.

The Casa Document sets out the goals and the objectives of the EPP in the area of social policy.

“Social issues in Europe require the urgent attention of policymakers. The financial crisis that has led to continued unemployment, most critically among young people, has contributed to social crises in certain parts of Europe. The EU has demonstrated that measures implemented at EU level can have a fundamental impact on citizens’ lives but there is still a great deal more that has to be done”, claimed PN Head of Delegation David Casa.

The Casa Document establishes how the EPP Group will aim to move forward on social issues during the years to come. In particular, the EPP Group also discussed the Posting of Workers Directive.

Speaking during a meeting of the EPP Group Bureau Casa stated: “Social policy can touch the lives of so many citizens in a significant way. At a time when unacceptable unemployment continues to prevail in some member states and the unprecedented influx of migrants and refugees has created a significant strain on EU social systems, the EPP Group must show that it has the vision to lead the debate on these crucial issues”.

Speaking about the document Vice-Coordinator Heinz Becker stated that “There is one person who led in all this process, and that it is our Maltese European Parliament Coordinator in the employment committee, David Casa. He was in a key position to coordinate our work in the committee, and he was very successful at that I can say". The Austrian MEP pointed to changing demographics in Europe and the importance of ensuring that older persons are integrated into the workforce.

The Casa Document will now surpass its final hurdle when it is voted on by all EPP MEPs during an EPP Group meeting.
