Sergio Aguero scored one goal and helped create another as Manchester City powered to a 3-1 first-leg win over Dynamo Kiev in the last 16 of the Champions League on Wednesday.

Aguero and David Silva's goals gave City a 2-0 cushion at the break before Vitaliy Buyalskiy pulled one back for Dynamo and Yaya Toure secured a valuable third away goal for City.

"It is not finished but playing away and having a two-goal lead is very good," City coach Manuel Pellegrini said. "Maybe when it was 2-1 we had moments of doubt, but then we got the third goal."

Facing a Ukrainian team which had not played competitively since December, Aguero took full advantage of poor Dynamo defending at a corner to score his 15th-minute opener with a simple finish after being left unmarked.

Aguero has now scored eight goals in City's last nine games and 16 in his last 17 Champions League starts. The Argentine also helped to set up City's second, feeding Raheem Sterling with a backheel on the edge of the box. Sterling then crossed low for Silva to score at the far post just before halftime.

Dynamo shook off some of the rust in the second half and struck back in the 59th minute through Buyalskiy, whose shot from 20 yards (18 meters) deflected in off Nicolas Otamendi. That marked the 10th Champions League game in a row in which City has conceded at least one goal.

Buyalskiy's goal breathed new life into the Dynamo team, as well as delighting Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko, who was watching from the stands with a group of soldiers in a show of support for Ukrainian forces fighting Russian-back separatists in the country's east.

Poroshenko almost had more to celebrate in the 79th minute when Buyalskiy came close to scoring his second, only to be denied by the superb reflexes of Joe Hart, who made a low one-handed stop to keep out the shot from the edge of the box.

It was Hart's second notable save of the night, after he tipped over an effort from Dynamo's star winger Andriy Yarmolenko in the opening minutes.

Both Silva and Sterling appealed for second-half penalties after making contact in the box with Dynamo defenders, but neither was given, though in Silva's case it appeared the Spanish forward was unfairly denied a spot-kick.

Toure, who had earlier set up Aguero with a header for the opener, added City's third with a curling shot in the 90th minute, leaving Dynamo's 41-year-old goalkeeper Oleksandr Shovkovskiy helpless.

The win ends a three-game losing run for City in all competitions and comes after Pellegrini rested star players for a 5-1 loss to Chelsea in the FA Cup on Sunday, opting to focus instead on City's push to reach a first Champions League quarterfinal.

City had chances to leave Kiev with even more away goals ahead of the second leg on March 15, with one of the best opportunities coming when Toure headed narrowly wide from close range in the 82nd minute.

The game had been due to be played in an empty stadium as part of Dynamo's punishment from UEFA for racist attacks on black fans at the group stage game against Chelsea in October.

However, UEFA reduced the sanction, allowing fans into the Olimpiyskiy stadium, which was far from full, though the home crowd was vocal. No major incidents of disorder appeared to occur in the stadium.

Ten-man PSV Eindhoven battled to a 0-0 draw with Atletico Madrid in the Champions League round of 16 on Wednesday, comfortably surviving more than 20 minutes after a red card for striker Gaston Pereiro.

PSV coach Phillip Cocu said before the match that both sides would likely settle for 0-0, but he was far happier than Diego Simeone with the goalless stalemate after PSV held on following Pereiro's dismissal for two senseless fouls.

"I am very satisfied with this result," Cocu said. "I said beforehand that if we could keep a clean sheet at home it would put us in a good position for the second leg."

With its numerical advantage from the 68th minute, Atletico pressed forward relentlessly but could not find a way through PSV's defense.

"The only thing we missed was scoring a goal," Simeone said.

In the night's other match, Manchester City beat Dynamo Kiev 3-1 in Ukraine to take a massive step toward the quarterfinals.

In Eindhoven, the home team was missing captain and striker Luuk de Jong, who was suspended after picking up a yellow card in the group stage victory over CSKA Moscow. Cocu instead started Pereiro up front, but the Uruguayan made a name for himself for all the wrong reasons.

In a major boost for PSV, veteran Mexico midfielder Andres Guardado was fit to play his first match since injuring a hamstring on Jan. 30 and he made his presence felt.

Guardado repeatedly pounced on loose balls in front of his defense and spread them wide to clear danger, while also setting up attacks. He also intercepted a dangerous 52nd-minute cross just in front of Atletico's Luciano Vietto.

The home fans gave him a standing ovation when he was substituted in the 75th minute.

The Mexican's performance, "shows how important he is for this team," Cocu said.

PSV, the 1988 European champion that was back in the Champions League knock-out stage for the first time since 2007, won all three of its group stage matches, while 2014 runner-up Atletico was unbeaten on the road as it topped Group C.

Atletico had the best chances of a tight first half, with defender Jeffrey Bruma and goalkeeper Jeroen Zoet ensuring the home team went into halftime on level terms at a sold-out PSV Stadium.

Bruma came to Zoet's rescue with a goal-line clearance in only the fourth minute after Vietto had run onto a perfectly weighted long pass from Gabi and chipped the ball over the advancing keeper.

On the half hour, it was Zoet who saved PSV by sprinting off his line to block a shot by striker Antoine Griezmann.

Just a minute later, Davy Proepper had PSV's best chance of the match, but poked the ball straight at Jan Oblak in Atletico's goal after a quick exchange of passes with Pereiro.

Atletico moved up a gear after the break, though it was PSV that came closest to scoring early in the second half when Atletico midfielder Jorge "Koke" Resurreccion slid in to intercept a cross from the left and almost deflected the ball into his own net.

The match was transformed by Pereiro's sending off, with PSV largely forced to defend and Atletico pouring forward in numbers, searching in vain for an away goal to take to the second leg in Madrid next month.

"PSV is a good team and they now have the advantage that an away goal counts double, but we will have the Vicente Calderon stadium crowd behind us," Simeone said.
