Manchester City beat Liverpool 3-1 in a penalty shootout after a 1-1 draw in the League Cup final at Wembley Stadium on Sunday, claiming the first major trophy of the English football season.

City goalkeeper Willy Caballero made three saves during the shootout and Yaya Toure scored the decisive kick, sliding the ball past Liverpool goalkeeper Simon Mignolet.

Mignolet had been at fault earlier when City took the lead in the 49th minute, when he failed to deal with a shot by Fernandinho. It should have been a routine save but the shot went straight through Mignolet.

Coutinho equalized for Liverpool in the 83rd minute from close range after an Adam Lallana effort hit the post and rebounded neatly into the path of the Brazilian midfielder.
