Rafa Benitez says there is a break clause in his contract allowing him to leave Newcastle should the team get relegated from the English Premier League.
The Spaniard was hired as Newcastle manager on Friday, with the club next to last in the league with 10 games remaining.
Fired as Real Madrid coach in January, Benitez was presented as the new manager on Saturday and said it was "normal" to have the break clause in his deal.
Benitez said: "I am coming here trying to do my best to stay in the Premier League and if I have a compromise for the future, it's because I am convinced that we will do well. I want to stay here."
Benitez's first game in charge is against league leader Leicester on Monday.
