PM says Konrad Mizzi’s bid to open Dubai and Panama accounts were ‘standard enquiries’

Tuesday, 5 April 2016, 20:34 Last update: about 9 years ago

The Prime Minister has said that Konrad Mizzi's bid to open a bank account in Dubai and Panama were standard enquiries, more than formal attempts.

In comments to journalists after an inauguration at the Qawra Palace Hotel, Dr Joseph Muscat avoided questions related to the Minister's attempt to open accounts in Panama and Dubai. He said that the most important thing was that an independent tax audit was currently under way to establish if there were any irregularities.

Konrad Mizzi's attempt to open accounts in Dubai and Panama was exposed following Panama Leaks last Sunday. The documents revealed offshore holdings of politicians and VIPs from all over the globe. Minister Mizzi was the only Minister in the EU to be mentioned in the Panama Leaks.

Dr Muscat said that informed enquiries about bank accounts were part of a standard service offered.

Pressed whether he would be willing to accept the resignations of Konrad Mizzi and Keith Schembri, the Prime Minister said that a decision will be taken once independent audits are concluded.
