An old quarry which had been subject to over 24 years of limestone extraction is to be restored and reused for agricultural purposes following an approval for development permission by the Planning Board.
The quarry with an approximate surface area of 9,700m2 is located in an area to the south east of Siggiewi known as Ta’ Sgamardi and to the west of Wied ix-Xkora which together with the other valleys in the area form part of the Wied il-Kbir valley system.
The restoration project which is calculated to be complete within 4 to 6 years will be carried out in three phasing which include: back filling the quarry with inert waste material, soil deposition and the soil conservation. The project also includes the construction of random rubble walls along part of the quarry site.
