Government launches second scheme for the restoration of historical sites and monuments

Friday, 19 August 2016, 13:51 Last update: about 10 years ago

The government has launched the second round of a scheme for the restoration of local historical buildings and monuments.

Parliamentary Secretary for Local Government Stefan Buontempo launched the scheme earlier today during a visit at the De Rohan arch in Zebbug – one of five projects chosen in last year’s scheme. The other projects are the Santa Lucija chapel in Santa Lucija, the St John’s chapel in San Gwann, the Porto Salvo chapel in Hamrun, and the statue of St Andrew in Luqa.

A total of €300,000 were allocated for the first scheme. The Restoration Directorate provided the workers and all the necessary materials.

Dr Buontempo the response this time round has been more encouraging, with more local councils showing interest. Chapels, fortifications and other forms of military architecture, monuments, niches, statues and fountains are all eligible, he said.

Local Councils have until 31 August to submit their applications.
