ENGOs Friends of the Earth (Malta), Flimkien ghal Ambjent Ahjar, Ramblers’ Association of Malta and Din l-Art Helwa, fully support the ERA board in its decision to lodge an appeal against the application for a 38-storey tower at Town Square Sliema.
The eNGOs will however still be going ahead with their own joint appeal which will serve to back up that of the ERA, as the massive high-rise project in Sliema approved by the Planning Authority, will have an impact on health and landscapes all over Malta and therefore we cannot afford to leave any stone unturned.
There is also the fact that neither Sliema Council nor ERA are appealing against the Mriehel Towers. In also lodging a joint appeal against Mriehel Towers, the eNGOs want to highlight the serious deficiencies in both cases, in the light of the fact that the high-rise projects did not meet all the requirements of the FAR (high-rise) policy and lacked important studies. Furthermore, the Mriehel site was added to the FAR policy without any public consultation.
We hold that the impacts of these two proposals are wide and heavy enough to touch the whole of our national territory and not just the Sliema and Imriehel areas and therefore call on the public to help the eNGOs in this endeavour.
