Aurora celebrates its 40th with a grand symphonic concert

Friday, 18 November 2016, 09:56 Last update: about 8 years ago

Fresh from its resounding opera success of Carmen, the Aurora is set to continue with its 40th anniversary celebrations, this time round, with a grand symphonic concert featuring the Leone Band, for the 25th year running with Colin Attard at its helm, on Saturday 26 November 2016 at 8pm.

The opening night with a new production of Bizet's much-loved Carmen was a stunner, and the coming one promises to be no less. As an annual concert, this November concert comes as a routine event, but the 40th anniversary does not come every year, and thus, the Aurora finds the best justification in walking that extra mile to come up with a night to be remembered.

Reminiscing the various productions and purposes it has served, the Aurora will see its resident musical body - the Leone Band - perform excerpts from Mikado, the first operetta performed at the Aurora, as well as from Bizet's Carmen - the opera that only Aurora has produced in the last 40 years in Malta and Gozo. Other significant music in the line-up also includes film music - Mancini's theme from The Exodus, a film that was so popularly screened in the early days of the Aurora cinema.

Leone Band in concert - the grand symphonic concert will be the most important event not only for the Leone Band itself but also for the theatre establishment which will render homage to those visionaries who with sheer determination and love for a noble cause succeeded in building this largest opera house on the islands. The concert will come to a rousing finale with Tchaikovsky's 1812 overture, just like what happened when Joseph Sammut led the Leone Band on the opening gala night on 9th October 1976.

Entrance to the event is free of charge. Seats are generally available on a first-come-first-served basis. However, interested patrons are requested to reserve their preferred seats, with seating tokens being then collected from the door. Bookings and requests may be effected via [email protected], www.teatruaurora.com or 79045779 (evenings only).

Leone Band in concert is scheduled for 26 November 2016 at 8pm. Doors are open at 7:30pm.
