Forty years after winning the First Division league for the 24th time in the club’s history, Floriana FC players who formed part of the team met up yesterday to celebrate the event.
On 23 April, 1977, Floriana beat Hamrun 2-1 to clinch the title, the highest honour in Maltese football at the time (the Premier League came years later). Before that game, the players and coaching staff posed in front of the statue of St Publius, patron saint of the town.
Yesterday, the players and staff met again – with the exception of two individuals – to take another photo in front of the statue, taking up the same places in the picture as they had four years ago.
Floriana have since become Malta champions just one other time, in 1993, for a total of 25.
