A quarter of a million calls received on Supportline 179

Saturday, 28 January 2017, 18:08 Last update: about 8 years ago

A quarter of a million genuine calls have been received on the national Supportline 179 during its 20 years of existence within Aġenzija Appoġġ, thanks to the efforts and dedication of the volunteers and staff running the service.

Originally a helpline for victims of domestic violence and for child victims of abuse, Supportline 179 eventually evolved into a national helpline. These days it offers a 24-hour basis and deals with a wide range of problems including domestic violence, child abuse, suicidal tendencies, loneliness, emotional difficulties, behavioural problems, substance abuse and gambling, amongst others.

Additionally, in the last few years Supportline 179 has further extended its service and now also takes calls made to the EU Emotional Support Helpline 116 123 and the EU Child Helpline 116 111. The aim is to have the same number help-lines throughout the EU that can be called for help.

An event was held last Friday to commemorate the 20 years of service and also to acknowledge the dedication and sterling work of the 43 volunteers who operate the service, as it is through them that callers are receiving help. The staff and volunteers were joined by the Family and Social Solidarity Minister Michael Farrugia, Foundation for Social Welfare Services CEO Alfred Grixti and Aġenzija Appoġġ Operations Director Ruth Sciberras.

The service rendered by Supportline 179 is crucial to the person in need of help and Aġenzija Appoġġ advises people to use it responsibly, thus allowing the lines to be open for those who genuinely need assistance – especially in cases of emergency.

Anyone interested in joining the current team of volunteers at Supportline 179 can visit www.appogg.gov.mt for more information, or call 2388 5110 during office hours.
