A “face” has appeared in the place where the Azure Window broke off from the mainland on Tuesday, bringing to an end the aura surrounding one of the best-known icons of the Maltese Islands and perhaps creating another.

Our photographer Jonathan Borg captured these amazing shots this morning, with the “face” etched out from the side.

The rock face does not seem to be too solid, as large cracks on the side indicate that the section could also break off, sooner rather than later. But only time will tell.

In this newsroom, we’re having a debate – is it a human face, or an animal’s face? Is it a monster, horns and all? Is it just a mouth with a tongue?
