Tonight, a trailer that will carry steel girders for the Kappara bridge will test the route to take the beams, constructed in Spain, from Marsa to the site.
Transport Malta will soon start building the deck of Kappara Bridge. For the past months, a firm in Spain was constructing steel girders that will form the base of the deck. Eight girders for each direction will extend between the piers throughout the whole extent of the flyover. The largest girder is almost 30 metres long.
The firm has constructed the girders and will be shipping them from La Coruña in Spain in the coming days. The girders will arrive at the site of the former Ship Building and huge trailers will take them to the site in Kappara. Their size makes it a challenge to transport them by road.
Transport Malta planned a route for the trailers and will be testing it tonight. One of the trailers that will carry the beams will set out from Marsa tonight at 22:00. The trailer will drive through Triq il-Labour, Triq Aldo Moro, the Marsa-Ħamrun Bypass, Regional Road and Triq Mikiel Anton Vassalli.
The trailer will be driving on the right hand side carriageway since it is easier to manoeuvre the heavy payload. The road will be closed in segments to allow drivers to drive through alternative routes for the segment and go unimpeded for the rest of the route. Police and Transport Malta officers will be closing the segments and guiding drivers to bypass the closed segments through alternative routes. Whilst apologising for the inconvenience, we ask drivers to collaborate with officials on the road and follow their instructions.
The trailer is expected to take around three hours to make the trip. Personnel from Civil Protection, Enemalta and the contractor will be making the route as well to cater for eventualities.
Once the girders arrive, trailers will go through this route to carry the beams, one or two at a time each night. Workers from the Spanish firm that constructed the beams will weld them in place immediately. We will communicate further details closer to the date.
