In the midst of the general election madness, some Maltese football supporters flocked to their favourite sports bars for the UEFA Champions League Final, where fan favourite Juventus are facing off against the ever popular Real Madrid.

The match, taking place in Cardiff, kicked off at 8.45 pm and voting in the Maltese elections ends at 10 pm.

By 2pm this afternoon, more than half of those eligible to cast their vote in the 2017 general elections (52.32%) did so, possibly because they listened to political leaders who urged such action, or because of this very match. Four years ago during the 2013 elections, the turnout at 2pm was just 49%.

The Malta Independent went to meet the football supporters at the Juventus Club in Santa Venera. Speaking with this newsroom a number of supporters indicated that for them, at least for a few hours Juventus comes first, and the colours of blue and red were briefly forgotten.
