Wednesday, 14 June 2017, 14:30 Last update: about 9 years ago

Carmela Cini, a 46-year-old woman from Qawra, was remanded in custody on charges related to the theft of 300 euros. She was also charged with damaging the property of a man named Colin Sant.

The prosecution also explained that the woman drove a car without being covered with the necessary insurance and without a valid driving licence.

Inspector Nicholas Vella told the Magistrate that the woman, who is unemployed, does not have a clean criminal record. Upon this mention, defence lawyer Franco Galea said that the court should not pass judgement on someone's previous criminal record. He said that bail should be denied only in cases when there is a risk that the accused does not show up for future proceedings.

However, Magistrate Ian Farrugia noted that the accused had breached bail conditions in the past. He then ruled that the accused should not be given bail and was remanded in custody.

The accused pleaded not guilty to the charges against her.

Inspector Nicholas Vella prosecuted while Dr Franco Galea led the defence.
