An Albanian minor has been conditionally discharged after he was found attempting to travel from Malta to London using a fraudulent identification card.
The incident took place yesterday when the police were tipped off about a Greek national that was trying to travel to London using false documents. The police approached the accused, found he had a Greek ID but upon further inspection of his belongings, genuine Albanian identity documents were found.
The police took the Greek ID to the forensics lab where it was confirmed to be fraudulent. The accused, aged 15, pleaded guilty to the charges brought against him which included being in possession of false documents and making false statements.
Legal aid Mark Mifsud Cutajar argued that in light of the accused’s age and the early admission of guilt, a conditional discharge would be fair. He also asked the court to send the accused back to his country of origin.
Magistrate Gabriella Vella, presiding over the case, found the accused guilty of the charges brought against him and handed down a conditional discharge of one year.
Inspector Victor Aquilina prosecuted.
