Partit Demokratiku Leader Marlene Farrugia has appealed for the Nationalist Party to suspend its leadership race. Posting on PD’s Facebook page, Farrugia listed a number of proposals which she believes would help set up a strong Opposition. 

Farrugia, who has already declared that she has no faith in any of the four PN leadership contenders, said that the PN should change its statute to allow all members to directly vote for the PN leader “so that the cliques are eliminated.”

“The PN should suspend the election and choose another date sometime early next year. Simon Busuttil should be kept as interim leader until a new leader is chosen.”

“The PD stuck its neck out for PN in the most difficult time in contemporary history, and even contested on the PN ticket in the last election, but we still can’t contest the PN leadership election or for any other post. We’re not even allowed to vote.”

She reminded PN that the PN was created to serve the national interest. “Right now, the national interest is to have a strong Opposition which is prepared to lead the government as soon as possible. Do you really believe that anyone out of the four candidates is willing to become leader to serve the national interest?” she added in her status.
