The Maltese national team ended its commitments in the World Cup qualifying group for Russia 2018 with its ninth defeat from 10 matches, losing to Slovakia.
It was the last game for Italian coach Pietro Ghedin, with the Malta Football Association still to name his successor.
After the 1-1 draw against Lithuania at Ta’ Qali on Thursday, the Maltese team spent most of the game anchored in its own half, with Slovakia dominating the proceedings from the first whistle.
Nemec (photo) was the hero for the Slovakians, scoring the first two goals. He opened the score just after the half hour and added a second in the 62nd minute following a Zerafa blunder midway through the second half.
Andre Duda added a third in the 69th minute as the Slovakians could celebrate their second place in the group, which gives them a possibility of place in the play-offs for a place in the World Cup after Scotland were held to a draw by Slovenia.
