188 same-sex couples entered a civil union since introduction of law

188 same-sex couples have entered civil unions since the introduction of the law in April 2014, till April 2017.

Minister for Equality Helena Dalli placed these figures in parliament today, replying to a parliamentary question by Nationalist MP Jason Azzopardi.

Since then, same-sex marriage has also been introduced, therefore the number of civil unions and marriages of same-sex couples is expected to have increased further.

The same-sex civil union bill wass approved in April 2014. Same-sex marriage was made legal in September of this year. 

Figures show that between 15 April 2014 and 30 April 2015, 54 same-sex couples entered into civil union. Between 1 May 2015 and 30 April 2016, 67 same-sex couples entered civil unions and between 1 May 2016 and 30 April 2017, 67 same-sex couples entered into civil unions. Six heterosexual couples entered civil unions in total within the three timeframes.
