Deputy prime minister and Health Minister Chris Fearne said that recently a legal notice was issued to pave the way for transgender health care provision, free of charge.
Fearne made his remarks while addressing a Malta Union of Midwives and Nurses (MUMN) seminar entitled ‘Looking at health through the gender kaleidoscope’.
The legal notice amends a law in the Social Security Act which allows transgender people to receive therapy related to gender identity, free of charge.
Transgender persons looking to avail themselves of the service may present their ‘yellow paper’ for issues related to gender identity and sexual characteristics.
“In the coming weeks, we will be launching a document about the services offered for conditions related to gender identity and sexual characteristics. This plan will be published for the purposes of a public consultation facilitating access to health care for transgender persons,” Fearne told the audience.
