Our ultimate goal is to become a leading professional services provider

The Malta Business Weekly Thursday, 26 April 2018, 10:37 Last update: about 8 years ago

CHRIS CINI was recently promoted to Legal director at Equiom Malta. He talks to Malta Business Weekly about his experiences in the legal profession and his hopes for the future.

What is your business background?

I studied law at the University of Malta and graduated with a doctor of laws in 2008. I was admitted to the Maltese Bar in the same year and since then I have gained 11 years of experience working in a series of local law firms from entry level posts to senior positions. I have since focused on maritime (both yachting and shipping), aviation, corporate and commercial law.

What do you do at Equiom?

I joined Equiom in 2015 to form part of its global legal team. My day-to-day role includes advising on matters concerning financing, purchase and sale, importation, crewing and other aspects of vessel and aircraft management.

As Legal director, I will continue to advise on legal matters for the business while also taking a seat at the Board and taking a more significant role in business development, company strategy and performance.

Who is your business role model?

I owe my experience to a number of people I've met along the way in my career.

Best business lesson learned?

Effective business is all about teamwork.

Best thing about your job?

Meeting and interacting with people all the time.

Where in the world would you like to visit?

South America. Hopefully I will be able to visit soon.

What is interesting about the industry you work in?

The yachting and aviation industries are both very dynamic. The world of luxury assets is an exciting environment and you get the opportunity to meet high profile people while working on an array of superb-looking vessels.

Equiom has recently completed a number of acquisitions. How has this helped grow the business?

Most recently, Equiom acquired businesses in Luxembourg, Monaco and in Malta with the recent acquisition of DF Corporate Services.

It has always been a big part of our strategy to build on our presence in Malta and strengthen our offering. The acquisition of DF Corporate presents perfect synergies between the two businesses.  Before the acquisition, we managed a large amount of yachting and aviation business and this type of work was really core to what we do. Now with DF Corporate, we are experiencing more corporate work and, with an existing client base from multiple jurisdictions, we are able to serve worldwide markets with a new set of expertise in areas including accounting, compliance and client services.

We have grown from seven staff to 14 and have moved to brand new offices in Mriehel. In doing this, we were careful to ensure there was ample space for growth to support our plans for further expansion. Our ultimate goal is to become a leading professional service provider in all of the jurisdictions in which we operate and we are working hard to achieve this right here in Malta.

I am excited about the opportunities on the horizon for Equiom Malta and look forward to being more involved in key decisions about the future of the business.
