Watch: Nexia BT partner Karl Cini interrogated by the police

Thursday, 23 August 2018, 19:20 Last update: about 7 years ago

One of Nexia BT partners Karl Cini was interrogated by the police for several hours on Thursday.

Cini was seen emerging from the police depot with his lawyer Stephen Tonna Lowell at around 18:30 after reportedly being inside the depot from early afternoon.

This newspaper attempted to pose questions to Cini, but he was whisked away from inside the depot car park by a car that was waiting outside the gates before the questions could be asked.

Cini along with Nexia BT managing partner Brian Tonna handled the offshore set up of Panamanian accounts of Minister Konrad Mizzi and Chief of Staff Keith Schembri.

Last month Egrant inquiry found no evidence that the third panama company belonged to Prime Minister Joseph Muscat or his family members.

Sources told this newsroom that Cini was being interrogated in relation to Egrant Inc. In April 2017 Tonna had said that Egrant was created on his request and its sole issued share was always in his possession.

In April 2017 slain journalist Daphne Caruana Galizia had uploaded on her blog text which she claimed to have been taken from two declarations of trust which showed that shares in Egrant Inc. were held by Mossack Fonseca nominees for Michelle Muscat.

Maria Efimova, former employee of Pilatus Bank, allegedly leaked information to assassinated journalist regarding Egrant and its ownership. The magisterial inquiry, however, found no evidence to support these claims. It also found that the signatures on certain documents had been forged. This newsroom has published a story saying that according to police sources Efimova is expected to be charged with perjury and slander.

Earlier this month former FIAU manager Jonathan Ferris was also interrogated by the police. He said that he stands by what he told Magistrate Aaron Bugeja during the Egrant inquiry.

The Caruana Galizia family in a statement a day after the Egrant conclusions were published said that, "the only reason Egrant Inc owernship is still questioned is because Cini gave Fonseca the name of the Panama companies' ultimate beneficial owner over skype rather than in writing by email."
