Darren Abdilla resigned from manager of Gzira United side yesterday, just a couple of days after the Maroons suffered their first defeat of the season against Hibernians.
Abdilla’s decision came a s surprise, as the Maroons have so far had an impressive season, and although suffering a setback on Sunday against Hibernians, they can still be considered as title challengers, apart from that, they are still in conetntion for the FA Trophy which is in the quarter final stages.
Abdilla’s resignation was not accepted by Gzira President Sharlon Pace, but Darren Abdilla insisted it was time to leave the club.
President Pace thanked Abdilla for his sterling service to the club, bringing the side from the First Division, to one of the best outfits in the Premier League.
Darren Abdilla joined Gzira United in 2014 in the First Division, finishing third and gaining the right to play the promotion playoff against Mosta, a playoff which was won by Mosta.
However the following season the Maroons did not fail as they returned to the top flight after a 34-year absence.
The following season he was assitant coach to Branko Nisevic, again taking over in November 2016, were he stayed till yesterday.
Technical Director Jesmond Zerafa is now Gzira’s manager.
