With two goals in each half Santa Lucia brushed aside San Gwann's feeble resistance to consolidate their third position in the standings, which would mean a promotion play-off at the end of the season.

Santa Lucia are back to their best form, after a rather difficult phase at the start of the new year, in which they ost contact with the top two positions.

There was no stopping Santa Lucia yesterday with Kevin Ante Rosero scoring a brace with Teixeira Maia and Karl Pulo scoring the remaining goals. Renan de Oliveira scored San Gwann's consolation goal six minutes from time from the penalty spot.

The heavy defeat leaves San Gwann deep in relagation trouble and they must now now recover quickly, especially in the forthcoming direct clashes.

Sirens-Naxxar L 1-0

Sirens: M. Montfort, K.P. Farrugia, R. Mandic, D. Sant, L. Mijic (M. Bustos 62'), M. Morgan Filho (G. Gesualdi 84'), A. Curmi, C. Gauci, I. Adeshina, R. Previ (J. Nwoba 51'), R. Fenech

Referee: Mario Apap

Scorer: Luka Mijic 56'

Sirens had to dig deep in their resources to overcome a spirited Naxxar side yesterday and move closer to a historical promotion to the top flight. Sirens' victory was a deserved one, but Naxxar gave the leaders a good run for their money.

The mawas a balanced affair for long stretches with Sirens holding the upper hand, but scoring chances were scarce with Omar Borg making the best save of the first half denying Morgon Filho.

On 56 minutes Luka Mijic scored the all important winner with a precise grounder from just inside the area. Twelve minutes from time Naxxar had the best chance to save the game when Saturday Nanapere was floored inside the area, but from the rsultant penalty taken by Cerqueira, veteran Miguel Montfort made a stunning save to hand his side yet another victory.
