The final run-in - the last four matches in this season's championship - is starting in earnest this weekend with some direct clashes involving teams eyeing points for different reasons.
Valletta, Hibernians and to some extent also Gzira, are still in line for the title, while the same Gzira are still considered favourites for 3rd place.
Hamrun, Birkirkara, Sliema and Balzan are eyeing the 4th place which may eventually land them in an Europa League berth next season, depending on results in the Malta FA Trophy.
At the other end of the standings, while Mosta and Tarxien are occupying a relatively safe place, five points away from the 12th place, St Andrews can push themselves towards avoiding a direct relegation by beating bottom placed Pieta which would mean mathematic relegation for the Hotspurs.
TOP MATCHES
Of course, the most important clash this weekend is that between leaders Valletta and third placed Gzira.
Following last weekend's results wherein Valletta were shocked by rivals Floriana in the derby, it is evident that the title challenge is no more restricted to just two clubs.
In fact, Gzira have the opportunity to throw the issue wide open if they also beat the citizens. That would see the Maroons creeping to just two points away from the Citizens with three matches to go.
It is a very interesting situation which also involves current 2nd placed Hibernians. The latter have a tough game against Birkirkara this evening and they are aware that they cannot afford to miss more points as the end of the campaign is nearing.
Both the citizens and the Paolites faltered the past weekend as Valletta lost all three points, while Hibernians dropped two points after suffering a Mosta equaliser in the dying moments.
The Paolites are also aware that they will be facing a team - Birkirkara - also with the points in mind. The Stripes, in fact, are back in the hunt for at least the 4th place after their last-gasp win over Sliema the past weekend.
These should prove to be two very keen matches, the results of which could offer a clearer picture of what will be in store in the remaining three matches.
OTHER MATCHES
The Hamrun-Senglea clash is another game where the two sides will be eyeing points for different reasons.
The Spartans are still chasing Gzira for a possible 3rd place, but are also still in the hunt for 4th place.
On the other hand, Senglea need the points in their efforts to stave off relegation. And at present they are producing strong performances which have seen them rising from bottom place to 11th in the standings, three above 12th placed St Andrews.
As already said, the St Andrews-Pieta encounter is a direct relegation clash.
It offers the Saints an opportunity to send their rivals to next season's first division while also pushing 13th placed Qormi closer to the direct Drop.
In case of victory, the Saints will go on the 21-point mark and that would leave them in a battle with Senglea to avoid the 12th place. The occupier of that placing at the end of the campaign will have to face the 3rd placed in the first division for a place in next season's Premier League.
Meanwhile, Qormi must certainly win their match against Sliema if they are still entertaining hopes of avoid relegation. If they lose and the Saints beat Pieta, then they will be eight points below the Saints with only nine points available from the last three matches - a very tall order indeed for the Yellow Blacks.
Sliema, in fact, are hot favourites to win this match as the Blues are still harbouring hopes of finishing at least 4th.
Tarxien and Mosta are occupying what seems to be a relatively safe position - 9th and 10th - on 23 points. But they are not yet mathematically safe and they would be expected to do their best to win more points from their clashes against Balzan and Floriana respectively.
The Greens are the only team who have no further interest in the proceedings - no chance for 4th place and completely safe from relegation.

The final run in for the title, Europa League berths and the Relegation issue is set to be as exciting as ever.
There is still a lot of uncertainty in the Championship and Europa League berths, not to mention the Relegation issue.
