Wednesday, 5 June 2019, 11:01 Last update: about 8 years ago

Malta had the fourth lowest minimum wage increase this year in EU according to a Europe-wide review. The review, published by Eurofound, a foundation focussed on living and working conditions, showed that across 22 EU countries, Malta was the fourth lowest when it came to minimum wage increase.

The monthly minimum wage stood at €762 in January, an increase of 1.9% over the same month last year. Maltese workers on minimum wage pay among the lowest taxes on their income.  If the minimum wage earnings and social security contribution amounts to 10%, then no income tax is paid. Therefore, minimum wage earners on the island pay the sixth lowest tax rate among the 22 surveyed countries.
