Man seriously injured after swimming in rough sea in Sliema, warning issued

A man is in serious condition in hospital after he found himself in difficulty while swimming in rough seas in Sliema.

The accident took place in Triq it-Torri, at around 9am, the police said.

The 45-year-old, who is from Sliema, was helped ashore by other beachgoers. He was later taken to Mater Dei Hospital by ambulance.

Magistrate Joe Mifsud is conducting an inquiry, The police are also investigating.

The Malta Red Cross has warned the public to avoid swimming at beaches situated along the eastern coast due to the force 4 winds.

"We strongly advise to avoid the areas of Sliema and Qawra due to potential hazards and use safer beaches instead," the organisation said.

On the other hand, beaches along the west coast such as Golden Bay, Pretty Bay and Għajn Tuffieħa are much safer as they are not affected by these winds which are expected to calm down later tonight.
