A group of 58 migrants was rescued by the Armed Forces of Malta in Maltese waters earlier this morning, an AFM official told The Malta Independent.
These are not the same migrants who are on the Alan Kurdi, which has 65 rescued people on board and is currently sailing towards Malta. The Alan Kurdi had earlier been on its way to Lampedusa, but the NGO that runs the ship, Sea Eye, said it was changing course to malta because it cannot wait until the state of emergency prevails, given Italy's attitude.
The migrants on board the Maltese P21 AFM Patrol Vessel are expected to reach Hay Wharf Base this afternoon.
