Credibility of Parliament needs to be restored - Godfrey Farrugia

Sunday, 7 July 2019, 11:53 Last update: about 6 years ago

The credibility of Malta's highest institution needs to be urgently restored, the Partit Demokratiku has said in a statement, adding that Parliament is hijacked by a dictated agenda of the Executive and is compromised by its backbench.

"The report by the Commissioner of Public Standards clearly indicates that the Backbench is not always faithful to its oath of office, as those also employed in Public Administration have conflicting interests."

"It is ironic that whilst Parliament's administrative procedure was made autonomous from government, its backbench is being weakened by design," stated outgoing PD Leader Godfrey Farrugia.

"It is imperative that the culture of ethical conduct as recommended by the Commissioner is taken up without any delay by the Prime Minister. The Commissioner has spoken clearly and specifically delving into all possible scenarios. The present situation in Parliament is unacceptable. It is undermining the fundamentals of democracy and making a mockery of the dignity of the Backbench."

PD notes that it is the duty of Members of Parliament to consult the Commissioner on matters that may give rise to ethical issues. His call asking them to go forward and seek advice is sensible.

"The community's trust in Members of Parliament is at its lowest. Through its representation in Parliament, Partit Demokratiku will continue to foster a culture of an open society whilst upholding national and public interests."
