Minister for Transport, Infrastructure and Capital Projects Ian Borg and Parliamentary Secretary for Planning and the Property Market Chris Agius welcomed to the ministry MCAST Institute of Engineering and Transport Director Stephen Sammut and MCAST Technology and Applied Sciences Deputy Principal Mario Cardona, together with a number of students who are studying or who have graduated with a Bachelor's Degree in Construction Engineering from MCAST.

"It is my greatest pleasure today to be able to announce that the law which has led to the building and construction reform is being amended so that anyone graduating with a Bachelor's Degree in Construction Engineering from MCAST as well as all those graduating in engineering from the University of Malta, will now be eligible to work as site technical officers towards improved safety on construction sites and towards better protection of third party properties. Another step not only in favour of a reform that is bringing about important and responsible changes, but also in favour of our youths who chose a profession and who are willing to work towards this reform with such dedication," said Minister Borg.

He spoke about the importance of the amendments that already came into force a few weeks ago and said that the government is committed that safety is always put first. The minister added that thanks to these changes, one can also ensure that work being carried out on these projects is of a good quality and reminded those present of the contractor register that is currently being prepared for these same goals.

From his end, Parliamentary Secretary Agius said, "I am satisfied to see that with full collaboration even with an educational institution, we have come to announce another important development as part of this reform. Engineers are other professionals who are willing to enter into this role because the principal goal should always focus on more safety and responsibility in the building and construction industry."
