Renowned University of Malta anthropologist Professor Paul Clough has passed away.

Prof. Clough was chief editor of the International Journal of Mediterranean Studies published twice yearly by the Mediterranean Institute of the University of Malta.

Michael Briguglio, a Senior Lecturer at the Department of Sociology, yesterday said of Clough’s passing, “Paul, you were a great colleague and friend to work with. An intellectual always willing to share ideas, discover knowledge and speak up for social justice.

“We were only just planning upcoming seminars, and your scholarly enthusiasm was as inspiring as when you were my lecturer in the 1990s.”

Prof. Carmen Sammut also weighed in on the sad news, saying, “I have just heard the unexpected and sad news of the demise of our dear colleague Prof. Paul Clough.

“Paul was an engaged lecturer greatly loved by students. He was a much respected member of the academic community.

“We often met in the neighbourhood in St. Paul’s Bay, where he lived in the vicinity of my dad and where we often conversed on our common passion for dogs.

“I heard that he died doing what he loved, having a swim with his new buddy.
“Paul you will be greatly missed. Rest in Peace my friend.”
