A major road in Nadur, Gozo, could soon collapse due to what appears to be a sinkhole beneath the tarmac.

The Gozo Ministry has reacted to reports and closed the road to traffic. 

Ministry for Gozo officials were duly alerted to take necessary action, Gozo Minister Justyne Caruana said. The condition of roads in Gozo is the consequence of years and years of neglect and that is why with Progett Ghawdex we are doing a number of road works concurrently to address this issue, she added. The road has been rendered safe and repair works to commence at the earliest possible, she said. 

Footage showing the state of Triq Ghajn Qasab, which leads to Ramla Bay, was uploaded on Facebook by a concerned citizen.

The video shows that there are several small holes in the surface tarmac, but a closer look reveals that large sections of the road are hollow beneath the surface.

Replying to comments beneath the post, Nadur mayor Edward Said said the issue had been reported to the authorities several times.

The road is collapsing like many others in Nadur, Said said, adding that this fell under the responsibility of the central government.

Gozo MP Chris Said also highlighted the danger, saying that hundreds of cars drive over this road on a daily basis. He said reports by the council had been ignored and called on the Gozo Ministry to take action.
