Pope Francis is known to be an extremely humble person and he proved this once again when arriving late for a meeting with Maltese President George Vella earlier this week.

A video clip uploaded by Romereports.com shows President Vella telling the Pope that this was a truly unforgettable moment.

Francis then apologises for keeping Vella waiting, telling the President that “it was our fault.”

According to the report, the Vatican asked “at the last minute” to push back the meeting scheduled with President Vella.

The Pope hosted Vella for a private audience on Monday morning.

Dr Vella described Pope Francis as a person who is truly close to the people. He said he felt like he was talking to someone he knew, and that the Pope understands the Maltese way of life and culture. During the meeting, Vella renewed Malta’s invitation for Pope Francis to visit the Maltese Islands.

At the end of the private audience, the Pope and the President exchanged gifts. The Pope, on behalf of the Maltese people, was gifted with a mosaic painting of the Madonna ta’ Pinu, created by the Gozo Diocese’s Eikon liturgical art centre.
