The Labour Party said Monday it has approved the process to elect a new leader.
On Sunday, Prime Minister Joseph Muscat said he would step down in January, after a new leader is elected on the 12th.
In a statement, the PL said nominations will open on Monday 9 December and close on Wednesday 11 December. A General Conference will be held on Monday 6 and Tuesday 7 January.
If more than two candidates apply, a first round of voting will be held on 7 January, with two candidates going through to a second round of voting held during the members' Congress. The congress will be held on 10, 11 and 12 January. Voting by eligible members will take place on the 11th.
The Labour Party's electoral commission will oversee the entire process.
