Champions Valletta added another cup to their glorious list of honours, beating balzan by the odd goal in three to lift the BOV Super Cup for the 13th time. It was a repeat result of last year's Super Cup in which Valletta had also beaten Balzan by the same scoreline.
The game however failed to impress and much, much more was expected from both sides yesterday in front of a rather poor attendance, roughly a thousand less than last year's final. The match was scrappy at times with both sides very erratic.
Valletta started like a house on fire, but after a good fifteen minutes the Citizens faded out. Balzan played the ball better in the first half and eventually took the lead with a well taken goal by Ljubomirac.
On the resumption Balzan went in search of a second goal but were stunned after three minutes when Fontanella scored a great goal, tio add to his personal collection. But eh best was yet to come as Nwoko scored a real beauty ten minutes later to send the Super Cup once again to the capital.
From then onwards Valletta were never in danger with Balzan unable to worry goalkeeper Bonello who once again was almost perfect in his handing and sorties.
The match started with a Piciollo freekick that went well over the bar. Valletta were more on the ball in the opening quarter of an hour with Piciollo and Fontanella always in the thick of the action. On 13 minutes a Nicholas Pulis scorcher from well outside the area was brilliantly saved by Naumovski.
On 27 minutes Correa tested Bonello and four minutes later the same Correa again tested Bonello with a low shot. On 34 minutes Balzan broke the deadlock when Uros Ljubomirac received from Correa, rounded Steve Borg before beating Bonello with a low drive.
Three minutes into the second half Valletta drew level with a gem of a goal scored by Mario Fontanella with a great shot on the turn from the edge of the area. Ten minutes later Valletta were in front with yet another great goal, this time scored by Kyrian Nwoko who chested the well just outside the area and fired a great shot with the ball hitting the woodwork before finishing past the goal line.
Valletta controlled the rest of the match with Balzan never giving the impression they could save the match. In the final stages Valletta had several fast breaks but failed to kill the match with a third goal. Their best chance came on 88 minutes with Nwoko blasting over the bar from the edge of the area.
At the end of the match Steve Bonello and Henry Bonello lifted yet another trophy to the cheers of the loyal City fans.
